A forced foul is used to track actions by the player which were not a direct result of an error on their part. Meaning the error was caused by the actions of the opponent making a defensive shot. The result of the shot is a fould and gives the opponent ball in hand.
Two players are playing, player A makes a defensive shot. Player B takes a shot which results in:
- Missing the object ball (9 ball) or balls (8 ball)
- Bad hit i.e. struck a different ball other then the object ball (9 ball) or object balls (8 ball) first
- Scratching with no contact on another ball prior to scratching
It would not be counted as a forced foul in the following situations:
- Scratching after making contact with the object ball or balls
- Miscue
These would be considered unforced fouls.
An unforced foul occurs when the shooter makes an error not directly caused by the opponent. When tracked it helps identify areas of improvement for the shooter with aiming and ball control. Examples are:
- Scratching on the break
- Scratching after making contact with the object ball (9 ball) or one of the object balls in 8 ball.
- Miscues
- Missing the intended ball that the shooter is aiming at. The miss occurs without the opponent having made a defensive shot.
- Making the 8 ball in the wrong pocket
- Making the 8 ball early??
The APA web site does track win/loss information. The information is available for the current session, prior sessions, and lifetime. However, it is organized by session. So if you wanted to look at a player's results for the last 3 sessions you would have to combine the information, calculate it, and then review the data.
The same is true if a player changes teams. You would have to combine the information from the two teams to obtain the results.
With Statpool you have the ability to filter the data to focus in on the results you want. You can see results for a player based on:
- Specific time frames usually by date or over a number of weeks
- For a specific team that is entered into Statpool
- As well as other criteria you specify
One of the most important things to understand is you have to enter the data into Statpool, it is not obtained from the APA.
